Escuela de elefantes dentro de la habitación (2a edición)

La red de dependencias infraestructurales en la que sucede el día a día de las estructuras institucionales también es cultura, y define prácticas artísticas. Esta escuela se plantea como un espaciotiempo en el que atender a las continuidades y discontinuidades, herencias y prospecciones, latencias y potencias que configuran el contexto técnico, burocrático y semiótico-material, y con las que los centros de arte (y más ampliamente las instituciones culturales) se constituyen. En sesiones de estudio inter- e intra-institucional, conversando y documentando a partir de close-readings de infraestructuras, herramientas, protocolos, fragmentos literarios y “literatura gris”, La Capella invita a la mesa de estudio y desaprendizaje a otras instituciones culturales y artísticas del contexto local y de ese modo se expone a un proceso multilateral de conocimiento del medio en el que existen los centros de arte. O dicho de otro modo: esta es una escuela en la que atender a los elefantes en la habitación, para ir siendo con ellos, a través de ellos, o a pesar de ellos. 

El grupo se conformará tácticamente, tratando de incluir a trabajadores culturales del contexto cuyas prácticas repercuten y se ven repercutidas por las dependencias infraestructurales del tejido computacional contemporáneo. Se requiere cierto compromiso de permanencia durante el curso. Interesades enviar email indicando estructura en la que trabajas, tipo de rol o tareas, y una reflexión breve de cómo te interpela el planteamiento de esta escuela en tanto que persona que manufactura cultura en la ciudad, a: lacapella@bcn.cat

La frecuencia de encuentro será bimensual (5 sesiones en total, de 3h cada una), organizándose los últimos jueves de cada mes en horarios de mañana y tarde alternamente para facilitar la conciliación con otras tareas y responsabilidades.

Fechas: Jueves 30 de noviembre, de 10 a 13h; Jueves 25 de enero, de 16 a 19 h; Jueves 21 de marzo, de 10 a 13h; Jueves 23 de mayo, de 16 a 19h; Jueves 18 de julio, de 10 a 13h.

(Un)wanted Spacetimes | Espaciotiempos (in)deseados

What does it mean to live in the midst of devastation and to find ways to exist through the cracks? Which questions, not new for several modes of existence and lands, are rised by the current planetary crisis? How many worlds have already ended? How many others keep becoming in absolute abandonment? How to give account of the ways in which colonialism, extractivism, patriarchy and different forms of violence have been oppressing, segmenting, excluding and disableing bodies, populations, epistemes and lands for a long time now? This itinerary focuses on (un)wanted zones as spacetimes of sacrifice, and wishes to examine areas that are (administratively, representationally) abandoned, unfairly exposed to damage or strongly wounded. In such places, human or nonhuman existence is disinvested in relation to the deep time of earth as well as the flowing times of day-to-day-turbocapitalism. What is yet to be (un)learned in relation to these areas, and what can the role of technology be? Which tools, discourses, aesthetics and practices can contribute to building forms of transversal resistance and action, while underlining the need for participated, intergenerational and interterritorial environmental justice?

¿Qué implica vivir en medio de la devastación y encontrar formas para existir a través de las grietas? ¿Qué preguntas, ya conocidas para numerosos modos de existencia y territorios, son planteadas por la crisis planetaria en curso? ¿Cuántos mundos ya se han acabado? ¿Cuántos otros siguen sucediendo en absoluto abandono? ¿Cómo dar cuenta de los modos en que el colonialismo, el extractivismo, el patriarcado y las diferentes formas de violencia han estado oprimiendo, segmentando, excluyendo y discapacitando cuerpos, poblaciones, epistemes y tierras durante demasiado tiempo? Este itinerario se fija en las zonas (no) queridas como espaciotiempos de sacrificio, y busca examinar áreas que están (administrativa y representacionalmente) abandonadas, injustamente expuestas a daños o fuertemente heridas. En esos espacios, la existencia humana o no-humana sucede en condiciones de desinversión en relación con el tiempo profundo de la tierra y de los tiempos fluidos del turbocapitalismo cotidiano. ¿Qué queda por ser (des)aprendido en relación a estas áreas, y cuál puede ser el rol de la tecnología? ¿Qué herramientas, discursos, estéticas y prácticas pueden contribuir a construir formas de resistencia y acción transversales, mientras se señala la necesidad de una justicia medioambiental participada, intergeneracional e interterritorial?

In the mouth of a polar bear: The undead feeling of the world

In this artistic research project Helen Pritchard and Cassandra Troyan engage with the production of transpecies animacy in the domains of edu-tainment, policing, and the military industrial complex. They interrogate the capacities of “legged robots designed to be used by the military, industrial, mining, energy, public safety and last-mile delivery” by Ghost Robotics, to animatronic spy animals made to look believable in natural history BBC programming, “Spy in the Wild”. All violent scenes dependent on visualizing technologies of feeling the world through aggressive sensing, scanning and surveillance.

Posing as either helpful or harmless machines, such as the Boston Dynamics dogs that can pick up your laundry, to more-than-animate soldier combatants dancing to tracks such a “Do You Love Me”. These robots are often posed as feeling the world, although not through embodiment, but with undead visual practices. In their physicality, they are a spy, spirit, or wraith –– witness to the world they sense and scan, yet beyond and removed from the consequences of its material realities. A viewer is constantly left with the place where a face should be looking back at you, or to look into the eyes of an animal expecting recognition only to see a camera lens or computational sensor returning your gaze.

Through the para-fictional scenarios explored in these viral video poems they investigate how transpecies storytelling and visual sensing technologies if not countered otherwise can be imploded as a mode for structuring the racist western imaginary of militaristic carceral imperialist fantasy. Using the visual and sonic principals of clickbait trauma-porn against itself, they reject a negative world-building project by instead approaching these techniques from a perspective of queer decolonial solidarity –– seeking to ultimately abolish the category of the species, along with the injurious technologies that could name, sense, and scan it as well.

All the Feels, conversation with Simone C. Niquille

In an article published at e-flux under the title “Too Much Information”, Simone C. Niquille walks us through a number of operations on capture technology and polygonal remodeling of facial gestures, each providing an extra layer of definition, towards an analysis of emotions.The ambition to recognise emotion by computer vision technology contains an array of challenges and assumptions: By which parameters are happiness, tiredness, anxiety and/or perplexity detected and measured? How are these emotions translated into algorithmic rules?

‘Too Much Information’ discusses the face as an arena of dispute for attentive markets of so-called realist emotional profiling and dives into the history of computer generated imagery (CGI) technology, a space of simulation and speculation. This talk will be an occasion to dive deeper in those layered operations, wondering about the extent to which values of accuracy are valid when studying mediated emotions from an intersectional perspective.
