How are digital technologies changing our collective lives? What techno-politics do we practice, and which dependencies can we afford?

In this first episode*, we will look into machine translation tools and how they keep transforming everyday language. Together we will pay attention to the vast systems of capture and extraction that are involved in "saying" things across languages, online.

"From lost to the river" is the machinic translation into English of the Spanish expression "de perdidos al río", which refers to an attitude of not giving up trying, as there's nothing left to lose. We could also think of this expression as a call for finding the courage to imagine other types of digital tools, tools that contribute to social and environmental justice instead of the opposite.

Translation tools, automatic transcription, captioning and algorithmic speech-to-text set up relations full of losses and dependencies but at the same time they open up possibillities for bordercrossings and trans-local organising. How to practice linguistic complexity in daily digital landscapes?

This online workshop is for everyone who aims to crack open the box of digital languaging. We will exchange practices of translation on-line, and study some of the technologies involved. We will also experiment with machinic transcriptions, closed captions and automated translations. Special guest: digital artist Aggeliki Diakrousi.

This document presents the report commissioned by Hamaca to Karl Moubarak, Jara Rocha, and Femke Snelting to gather the main aspects that a website of a cultural entity should or could take into account around sustainability criteria. The assignment is linked to the renovation of Hamaca’s website (a project that starts in 2024), but is intended to serve as a reference for any type of project that documents and shares cultural materials, with a special dedication to those that incorporate video. The document includes a reflection and a technical-political starting position; analyzes the different infrastructural, usage and maintenance dimensions of the web that could be taken into account based on the hamacaonline.net case study; finally, it poses a questionnaire around criteria that can help to make decisions when restructuring a web service.

Volumetric technologies are increasingly sought after commodities in a wide range of contexts from entertainment to city planning to military surveillance. Rendering a reality of their own, instead of the one's captured, volumetric technologies reflect a nested regime of representations, truths, and ideologies, producing an affective computational sublime. Hidden inside glossy renders and visual effects, these representations proliferate explicit politics, taking up space, volume and depth, minimising difference and the modes of representation.

In this conversation, Femke Snelting, Georgina Voss, Irene Fubara-Manuel, and Jara Rocha, with moderator Romi Ron Morrison, discuss the problems and promises of volumetric technologies and their seamless movement between entertainment, shopping, ikea catalogues, smart borders, and wildlife preservation. Unpacking the affects of the computational sublime, their conversation aims to bring bodies and data points and spaces back into relation with each other.

The evening starts with a performative introduction by the editors, followed by an intervention by designer, artist and researcher Alex Zakkas in conversation with Manetta Berends.

(Un)wanted Spacetimes | Espaciotiempos (in)deseados

What does it mean to live in the midst of devastation and to find ways to exist through the cracks? Which questions, not new for several modes of existence and lands, are rised by the current planetary crisis? How many worlds have already ended? How many others keep becoming in absolute abandonment? How to give account of the ways in which colonialism, extractivism, patriarchy and different forms of violence have been oppressing, segmenting, excluding and disableing bodies, populations, epistemes and lands for a long time now? This itinerary focuses on (un)wanted zones as spacetimes of sacrifice, and wishes to examine areas that are (administratively, representationally) abandoned, unfairly exposed to damage or strongly wounded. In such places, human or nonhuman existence is disinvested in relation to the deep time of earth as well as the flowing times of day-to-day-turbocapitalism. What is yet to be (un)learned in relation to these areas, and what can the role of technology be? Which tools, discourses, aesthetics and practices can contribute to building forms of transversal resistance and action, while underlining the need for participated, intergenerational and interterritorial environmental justice?

¿Qué implica vivir en medio de la devastación y encontrar formas para existir a través de las grietas? ¿Qué preguntas, ya conocidas para numerosos modos de existencia y territorios, son planteadas por la crisis planetaria en curso? ¿Cuántos mundos ya se han acabado? ¿Cuántos otros siguen sucediendo en absoluto abandono? ¿Cómo dar cuenta de los modos en que el colonialismo, el extractivismo, el patriarcado y las diferentes formas de violencia han estado oprimiendo, segmentando, excluyendo y discapacitando cuerpos, poblaciones, epistemes y tierras durante demasiado tiempo? Este itinerario se fija en las zonas (no) queridas como espaciotiempos de sacrificio, y busca examinar áreas que están (administrativa y representacionalmente) abandonadas, injustamente expuestas a daños o fuertemente heridas. En esos espacios, la existencia humana o no-humana sucede en condiciones de desinversión en relación con el tiempo profundo de la tierra y de los tiempos fluidos del turbocapitalismo cotidiano. ¿Qué queda por ser (des)aprendido en relación a estas áreas, y cuál puede ser el rol de la tecnología? ¿Qué herramientas, discursos, estéticas y prácticas pueden contribuir a construir formas de resistencia y acción transversales, mientras se señala la necesidad de una justicia medioambiental participada, intergeneracional e interterritorial?

From de-schooling to re-instruction: a couple of scenes of techno-political transformation in learning environments

 

'The de-schooling movement — advanced by Ivan Illich and others in the 1970s⁵ — argued for reducing the hegemony of formal instruction in education, aiming for an empowerment of diffused and emancipated forms of learning throughout society that could depart the normative and oppressive forms of top-to-bottom pedagogy of schooling institutions. Part of the analysis consisted in how normative social arrangements and institutional pedagogy form a reproductive loop informing and reinforcing each other, which works by keeping formal schooling as the fundamental site for learning. The constructive part of the proposal, which included computer-aided “learning webs” as possible informal arrangements for self-directed education, ironically clashes with the harsh reality of the large and centralized computationalist⁶ empires that relegate informal and self-directed exchanges to the periphery of the Internet. Moreover, the social arrangements and extractive behaviors that these giants enact are entering the reproductive loop described above via their privative infrastructures and commercial apparatuses, with their pedagogy-disguised-as-a-service. This outright *re-instruction of education is ongoing, business as usual, but it is not inevitable nor unopposed.

As this re-instruction of learning environments carries dangers and damages, as well as openings and possibilities in multiple forms, we felt the need to reflect on, and tackle this complexity in the form of different “scenes”, attending closely to their different aspects and agents. Describing is one step. Problematizing is another. Indicating simultaneous potentialities is hopefully a third one. Because when things get mixed, when vibration takes place and unhinging occur, there is always a potential to try otherwise and actively engage in a re-arrangement in other terms and by differentiated means, with more just, politicized and solidary forces.'

recurso pedagógico: infraestructuras tecnocoloniales [con Joana Moll]

La inmensa mayoría de las operaciones técnicas en el día a día contemporáneo suceden dentro de lo que puede llamarse «la matriz colonial»: una ordenación del mundo muy específica que funciona según la distribución de poderes resultante del proceso de colonización (como hito: la invasión de América en 1492) y los cambios radicales que se dieron económica, cultural, geográfica, espiritual, científica y socialmente durante dicho proceso, impuestos desde Europa. En otras palabras: la matriz colonial es la lógica subyacente que se puso en circulación de forma impuesta y que generó un nuevo orden de mundo a base del despliegue del sistema geopolítico del estado-nación y el imperio, económico del capitalismo desarrollista, cultural de la modernidad universalizante (en sus formas institucionales, humanistas y morales) y social por la imposición del sistema de jerarquización de etnias, con la consiguiente forma de explotación y discriminación por racialización. Es pertinente considerar esa matriz colonial para entender las cotidianidades también en el plano infraestructural, porque sigue perpetuándose en las formas contemporáneas de globalización, racismo sistemático e imperialismo occidental. La separación abrupta del mundo en un Sur Global que es usado por parte de un Norte Global a base de extractivismo material (de recursos) y cultural (de formas de vida, prácticas y representaciones) sigue aumentando sin cese las condiciones de desigualdad, desarraigo, exclusión, dominación, explotación y exterminio.

En la intersección entre el colonialismo y las (ya no tan) nuevas tecnologías, los oligopolios que rigen en forma de «innovación totalitaria» (imponiendo los regímenes técnicos, las formas en que circula la información, las condiciones de sociabilidad y desechabilidad, vigilancia o monetización de la experiencia mediada) son responsables de la acentuación de la matriz colonial en los tiempos de hipercomputación contemporánea. Tanto en el sentido medioambiental como en el sentido cultural o el laboral, las implicaciones de ese totalitarismo son notablemente nocivas.

Urge entender sus mecanismos internos para liberar las vidas (no-solo-humanas) de las lógicas individualistas, victimizadoras, desvinculadas de la tierra, homogeneizantes y desinformadas que producen esos oligopolios de la alta tecnología.

We Have Always Been Geohackers

As the so-called earth spun before us, the universalist geologic commons emerged. A particular regime embedded within the software that imbues the histories of colonial earth-writing and a geologics in which “[e]xtractable matter must be both passive (awaiting extraction and possessing of properties) and able to be activated through the mastery of white men.” In these scenes of turbocapitalism, the making present of fossil fuels and metals as waiting for extraction heavily depend on software tools, such as Gplates, for handling, interpreting and 3-D visualization of geological data. These entangled softwares form an infrastructural complex of mining and measuring. Such tools belong to what we refer to as “the contemporary regime of volumetrics,” meaning the enviro-socio-technical politics––a computational aesthetics––that emerge with the measurement of volumes and generation of 3-D objects. A regime full of bugs.

[paper] dis-orientation and its aftermath

Following Sara Ahmed’s invitation “to think how queer politics might involve disorientation, without legislating disorientation as a politics”, the collective enquiry Possible Bodies research team inventoried three items related to 3D artifacts, following through the implications of the contemporary renderings of “dis-orientation” they invoke. Each in their own way, the items relate to a world that is becoming oblique, where inside and outside, up and down are switching places and where new perspectives become available. They speak of the mutual constitution of technology and bodies, of matter and semiotics, of nature and culture and how orientation and the subjectivities that emerge from it are managed across the technocolonial matrix of representation in turbo-capitalism. The three items allow for a look at tools that represent, track and model “bodies” through diverse cultural means of abstraction, and eventually convoke their aftermath in a call for “disobedient action-research”.

Continuando la invitación de Sara Ahmed a “pensar cómo las políticas queer podrían implicar desorientación, sin legislar la desorientación como una política”, el equipo de la investigación colectiva Possible Bodies inventarió tres ítems relacionados con artefactos 3D, dando seguimiento a las implicaciones que las actualizaciones contemporáneas de “des-orientación” puedan invocar. Cada uno a su modo, los items están en relación con un mundo que está deviniendo oblicuo, donde dentro y fuera o arriba y abajo están cambiando posiciones, y donde nuevas perspectivas se hacen disponibles. Hablan de la mutua constitución de cuerpos y tecnologías, materia y semiótica, naturaleza y cultura; y de cómo la orientación y las subjectividades que de ahí emergen están
gestionadas por medio de la matriz de representación tecnocolonial en el turbocapitalismo. Los tres ítems permiten observar herramientas que representan, monitorizan y modelan “cuerpos”a través de diversos medios culturales de abstracción, y eventualmente convocan sus consecuencias en una llamada a la “investigación-acción desobediente”.
