Mutual Training for/by Portal Workers

This worksession brings together a group of 20 'portal workers' to engage in mutual training as a form of collective inquiry. The session will provide participants with modes of attunement to each other's rehearsals for collective life that are sometimes-depleted, some-times wild and feral and shiny -- reclaiming, letting go and shaking assumptions against the imposed narratives of the self-centered powers, from their very very centers and also not. Through the joyfully dissident technosciences, mourning humanities, rebel poethics, organising tactics and complex crafts that continue to try to world otherwise the many worlds that fit in this.

The session is designed as a mutual training ground for and by portal workers. It is a spacetime to actively attend to, register and acknowledge the sensibilities, perspectives and modes of intervention that portal work towards liberation might entail. As an insurgent collective research situation, it will allow us to read each other's work in resonance and in solidarity with each other but without the need to cohere.

[abstract]

This paper analyses how Big Tech and global consultancy firms are asserting control over carbon removal certification and governance through infrastructure solutions and technical standards. We argue that defining gaps in the underground constitutes a global takeover of material sovereignty, encompassing both knowledge and geological formations. We unearth Big Tech’s strategies of infra-solutionism to demonstrate, drawing on the work of inhuman geographer Kathryn Yusoff, how this takeover reinforces geological grammars and essentialises racialised and sexualised categories that disconnect us from the Earth. Drawing on queer poetry together with work of Marxist agronomist Amílcal Cabral we advocate for resistance to dominant geopower and form transnational solidarities against the cloud regime.

Complicit Chips gathers a group of researchers, activists, and artists to explore the complexities of high-density chips produced by NVIDIA.

NVIDIA is an enterprise recently transformed from a mid-sized producer of hard and software for accelerated computer graphics into a self-proclaimed 'world leader' of artificial intelligence (AI) computing. As of 2024, NIVIDA is valued at $2 trillion, surpassing Amazon and Google to be dubbed the 'Taylor Swift tech for investors'. Yet NVIDIA's chips for computing AI are resource-intensive offerings that—alongside game graphics, forest monitoring and medical devices—now include technologies used for policing and militant purposes. NVIDIA's numerous contracts with military agencies such as DARPA and arms companies such as Lockheed Martin are widely known. It's also clear that the their chips are directly and indirectly linked to the development of automated drones used in targeted killings and surveillance (in conflict zones like Gaza, for instance). Simultaneously, NVIDIA's hardware is now found in all Tesla vehicles, powers large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT, and exists in the chips of many smartphones. We're looking to reckon with the way that the computing industry is interwoven with both warfaring operations and everyday life. The fact that NVIDIA produces software powered chips that we want for our screens and games, but also are used in the Israel 1 supercomputers matters — a lot. It's worth figuring out how our own actions are intertwined with the issues at hand.

After two days of collaborative community research on the nebulous world of software-operated hardware, we will informally share what we found. Drinks and delicious Syrian vegetarian and vegan food served!

How are digital technologies changing our collective lives? What techno-politics do we practice, and which dependencies can we afford?

In this first episode*, we will look into machine translation tools and how they keep transforming everyday language. Together we will pay attention to the vast systems of capture and extraction that are involved in "saying" things across languages, online.

"From lost to the river" is the machinic translation into English of the Spanish expression "de perdidos al río", which refers to an attitude of not giving up trying, as there's nothing left to lose. We could also think of this expression as a call for finding the courage to imagine other types of digital tools, tools that contribute to social and environmental justice instead of the opposite.

Translation tools, automatic transcription, captioning and algorithmic speech-to-text set up relations full of losses and dependencies but at the same time they open up possibillities for bordercrossings and trans-local organising. How to practice linguistic complexity in daily digital landscapes?

This online workshop is for everyone who aims to crack open the box of digital languaging. We will exchange practices of translation on-line, and study some of the technologies involved. We will also experiment with machinic transcriptions, closed captions and automated translations. Special guest: digital artist Aggeliki Diakrousi.

Frontier Climate: A Bugreport

On February 9th, 2024, TITiPI is releasing a collectivelly written Bug Report to Frontier Climate on their Github (Stripe's OpenAPI) space.

 

Frontier Climate is a consortium of Big Tech companies which was established to manage advanced market commitments (AMC) for carbon removal. We call for businesses, institutions, communities, science labs and consumers to de-invest their money, time, energy and trust from this enterprise.

[LaaS] La vida es demasiado

«La vida es demasiado corta como para andarse con hojas de cálculo» (Life's too short for spreadsheets) es el motto del software que Hangar utiliza para su contabilidad. Ese software (con su ecología de prácticas más extensa) funcionó como disparador y objeto de estudio de una operations room que tuvo lugar durante cuatro días del julio pasado en Hangar. Una operations room es «una situación diseñada [por TITiPI] [1] para interrogar el impacto de una infraestructura computacional y su implementación sobre las operaciones de una institución, organización o colectivo.»[2] El objetivo es alcanzar un entendimiento en distintas capas de lo que hace o lo que fuerza una tecnología sobre los comportamientos de una institución y de quiénes la conforman. O en otras palabras: alcanzar un entendimiento de la agencia distribuida de eso que llamamos «lo técnico». Durante aquella intensa sesión de estudio, trece individuos nos vinculamos con la pregunta acerca de las logísticas relacionales que la contabilidad a través de la nube impone en la configuración de lo público contemporáneo.

El software que estaba en el centro de este análisis colectivo sirve así de ejemplo de la transición que se está produciendo en los últimos años del software como programa que se instala en las computadoras al software al que accedemos como servicio, pagando unas cuotas y delegando nuestros modos de operar y de mantenimiento en las empresas que lo proveen como un paquete de servicios.

Anna Manubens y Jara Rocha se proponen mantener una conversación, no tanto sobre los detalles e intensidad de aquel encuentro [3], como, de manera más general, acerca de las múltiples y variadas vinculaciones a las que da lugar la lógica del «servicio», y las numerosas declinaciones que las relaciones de servicio y/o servidumbre provocan en los comportamientos individuales e institucionales contemporáneos, cuyos roles pendulan tecnopolíticamente entre quien sirve y quien es servido.

Se trata, por tanto, de una ocasión para poner en común el tránsito y los modos en que la comunidad como espacio de manufactura de técnicas relacionales se ve colapsada por el paradigma de todo-como-servicio. Se compartirán reflexiones acerca del panorama relacional contemporáneo desde el interior de las instituciones (culturales) públicas, y la constatación del cambio de paradigma al extrapolar lo que acontece en clave de software a lo que acontece en la vida... y al revés.

[LaaS] Marta Echaves: Desconfiad de la piedad química

Marta Echaves conversa con Jara para presentar la continuación de su investigación acerca de las configuraciones de la experiencia químico-laboral contemporánea.

En el 2017 arrancaba el proyecto de investigación Working Dead. Escenarios del postrabajo, impulsado por La Virreina Centre de la Imatge y coordinado por María Ruido, Antonio Gómez Villar y Marta Echaves. En el libro que se editó como resultado de la investigación, Marta Echaves en su ensayo «Confiad en la piedad química» se preguntaba por la relación entre subjetividad, bioquímica y regímenes laborales, historizando las transformaciones que en las últimas décadas evidenciaban la fuerte imbricación entre el disciplinamiento del cuerpo del trabajador, la medicalización de la vida y la farmacologización de los malestares. En esta ocasión, revisando las hipótesis planteadas en el texto, especulará en torno a cómo la aparición en los últimos años de una serie de factores, tecnológicos, culturales y políticos anuncia la llegada de una tecnomedicocracia que, sirviéndose de la retórica de la «buena salud» de los trabajadores, augura la aparición de nuevos mecanismos de explotación laboral y de modelización de las subjetividades.

Workshop Pierre Huyghebaert & Jara Rocha: "Towards a regenerative justice of/for digital ecologies" 

In this workshop, we will attempt an immediate practice of the pathways prospected by Femke's talk, to collectively plot towards more solidary infrastructurations with and within cultural organisations. Departing from situated digital arrangements of some voluntary projects (please bring the laptop you use at work!), we will elaborate on a set of outlines to detect and unfold modes for collaboration, mutual care and the imagining, reclaiming and maintaining of non-monocultural technocultures that would integrate digital infrastructures as elements for joyful regeneration.

En este taller, asumiremos una práctica inmediata a partir de los caminos trazados por la charla de Femke, para tramar colectivamente hacia infraestructuras más solidarias con y dentro de las organizaciones culturales.  Partiendo de los acuerdos digitales de algunos proyectos voluntarios (¡trae el portátil que usas en el trabajo!), trabajaremos con una serie de esbozos para detectar y desarrollar modos de colaboración, cuidado mutuo e imaginación, recuperación y mantenimiento de tecnoculturas no monoculturales que integren las infraestructuras digitales como elementos para una regeneración alegre.

Joining the dots conference overview:

Many pathways to low-carbon futures have been articulated, but most fail to engage communities in imagining themselves as being part of those futures and involved in the transition. Cultural centres play an important role in building imaginaries and providing inspiration to navigate future horizons. How can they become key actors of the necessary environmental, social and digital transition?

Post-fossil societies would look very different to the ones we inhabit today in Europe. Landscapes, transport systems, buildings, communities and indeed most social relations would be transformed. For this meeting, our guests will be practitioners, multidisciplinary researchers, artists and policymakers working on low-carbon futures, who will share the concrete questions they are working on and the practices they are building to help citizens appropriate the future and feel that they are able to create it.

Leaving petroculture behind will not happen just through mitigation of fossil fuel use. It will also require systemic and cultural change. In-depth workshops will look at how cultural organisations can

• switch to a more ethical and sustainable use of digital
• care for their human resources
• improve their environmental impact
• use art as a transformational practice

A key concern will be moving away from extractive logics - which exhaust natural resources, human resources, and data - towards collective practices for care, creation and flourishing.

– En el marco de: InfraMantenimiento, línea de investigación-acción de Hangar.
– Acompañamiento: Hangar y La Virreina colaboran en el acompañamiento de la investigación poniendo en obra un dispositivo de investigación-publicación conjunto para organizar sesiones públicas a medio camino entre la investigación abierta y la publicación del proyecto de Jara Rocha.

InfraMantenimiento parte de la certeza de que a día de hoy las infraestructuras tienen más poder de gobernanza que los discursos. Esta línea de investigación recupera el “mantenimiento”, una categoría habitualmente opacada o menor —por no decir denostada— en los intereses y ámbitos llamados culturales, como forma de analizar, poner al día, adaptar o reparar infraestructuras de gobernanza, incluyendo desde aparatos burocráticos o institucionales hasta entramados tecnológicos. InfraMantenimiento es una investigación pragmática de Hangar, en el sentido de que quiere dar lugar a desarrollos materiales o infraestructurales como parte del proceso de investigación de tal manera que investigar sea también actuar y que esta actuación tenga consecuencias materiales.

El Primer Fellowship Hangar de Jara Rocha desarrolla InfraMantenimiento ahí dónde intersecta con su trayectoria de investigación y trabajo. La peculiaridad del Fellowship es justamente esta intersección, esta complicidad entre investigación del centro e investigación invitada de tal manera que se completen y alimenten mutuamente. Asimismo, su singularidad reside en la disposición de Hangar para que su cuerpo tecnológico-institucional sirva de caso de estudio y espacio de pruebas práctico en el que ensayar, material y semióticamente, la investigación.

LaaS (Life as a Service), una propuesta de Jara Rocha, miembro asociado de TITiPI, The Institute for Technology in the Public Interest

El SaaS, Software as a Service, es un modelo de negocio bajo el que una empresa desarrolla un producto de software y lo pone online, a disposición de clientes. El software se aloja en la Nube (cloud) y quien la usa accede en remoto mediante una suscripción (mensual, anual, etc.). La llamada “Nube” se construye sobre log(isti)cas profundamente extractivas, explotadoras y excluyentes. En términos político-estéticos, se trata de un régimen que prescribe lo factible y lo pensable, aplana y uniformiza la experiencia más cotidiana, enrigidece las condiciones materiales de posibilidad en el reparto de la experiencia con lo tecnológico e impone unas condiciones de subjetividad y de convivencia logísticamente mediadas.

En respuesta al régimen cultural de la Nube como monocultivo socio-técnico de la contemporaneidad, el Instituto para la Tecnología en el Interés Público (TITiPI) ha estado desarrollando investigación y acción para articular, impugnar y reimaginar infraestructuras computacionales. Como miembro asociado de TITiPI, y en el contexto de InfraMantenimiento, Jara propone poner en contacto sus metodologías de investigación-acción para-académicas con Hangar a través de un doble movimiento. Por un lado, atenderá a las genealogías locales de resistencia, invención y autonomía o federación computacional en Barcelona, desde la emergencia del ciberfeminismo y el ciberpunk hasta la devastadora llegada del paradigma SaaS y sus formas de hacer mundo (a través de constructos tan aparentemente distantes como las Smart Cities o el cooperativismo de plataforma). Por otro lado, estudiando en un marco más amplio la logística relacional de la categoría de vida (Life as a Service, LaaS). A pesar del mandato necropolítico de La Nube, y contra la nube pero desde dentro ¿cuáles serían las prácticas y posicionalidades que podrían hacer espacio para la desobediencia ontológica y epistémica, ejecutando cuidados de tipo paliativo hacia su eventual abolición?

Con una sensibilidad imantada entre las tecnociencias trans*feministas, el estudio e intervención antifascista de las infraestructuras, la justicia regenerativa y la lucha anti-tecnocolonial, el trabajo de este primer fellowship de InfraMantenimiento trata de detectar, nombrar, problematizar o acaso dar fin a algunas de las continuidades y discontinuidades entre las representaciones y prácticas culturales ante el colapso, y el solucionismo basado en la computación ágil y la optimización.
