expo How to do Things with Documents / proyecto Not Yet Know

La Fundació Antoni Tàpies y Oriol Fontdevila nos invitaron para ser intérpretes del archivo de la institución dentro del marco del proyecto How To Do Things With Documents. Nuestra contribución al proyecto es Not Yet Know: Ontologías sorpresa y agencia-ficción.

Como dispositivo paradigmático del proyecto moderno, el archivo es una zona de praxis y episteme especialmente atractiva para probar los funcionamientos de las Objetologías. Esto es: para testear formas de descentramiento del sujeto humano en las culturas del presente.

La creciente ansiedad ante la insostenibilidad de la cultura evidentemente antropocéntrica que las instituciones humanistas salvaguardan, ha llevado a unas configuraciones de mundo en las que el poder (de enunciación, de gobierno) se desplaza con/en/hacia tecnologías otrora desatendidas. Es ahí, en mundos altamente desubjetivados como el de las infraestructuras, donde tiene lugar la disputa por el presente.

Para entender/explorar la “condición posthumana” en los espacios y prácticas de las instituciones culturales contemporáneas, urge un debugging de agentes con posturas privilegiadas.

La propuesta de Not Yet Know articula tres objetos que responden a tres paradigmas de mediación:

- Un panel estático de fragmentos del archivo donde se ofrecen categorías desautorizadas para la lectura del material.

- Una superficie de iteración que permite recomponer el material dando lugar a reescrituras colectivas en el archivo.

- Un agente no-humano -una inteligencia artificial- que especula con la materia institucional remediada, reensamblándola algorítmicamente y ofreciendo sorpresas sintácticas y quizás también ontológicas. (Este objeto ha sido desarrollado en colaboración con Interzonas)

La exposición que tendrá lugar en el propio archivo será accesible desde el 12 de noviembre hasta el 4 de diciembre de 2015 y es parte de la iniciativa Performing the Museum.

By addressing our inquiry and practice towards the search of non-explicit relations between agents of a complex technosocial ecosystem, we aim to understand better the disanthropocentrificability  of culture. Off-side relations that can perhaps be performed if we  attend certain hidden ontological structures within those archival  landscapes, inhabited by myriads of agents of diverse sorts (humans and  non-humans). To look at them implies to find dispossessions, reassemblages and displacements of  objectual agencies, and hence to test speculative infrastructures for other possible cultures.

The  very basic toolkit and keywords we are going to use is articulated  throught a methodologial triad: alien phenomenology / remediation /  speculative fiction.

The  result we look towards has the shape of a mediation infrastructure. Its  basic features, are exportability to other archives and  openness/availability to adapt to other specific contexts.

Unlinked (dislocations, disappearances & deprecations) - 2014's MMD&C finnisage at Piet Zwart

This year’s graduation show of the Piet Zwart Institute’s Master of Media Design & Communication: Networked & Lens-Based perhaps reflects a shift in popular culture. Whereas no self-respecting media self-help book or newspaper article published in the last decade missed using ‘linked’ or ‘stay connected’ in the text several times, a more recent rash of articles and runaway best-sellers feature words such as ‘introvert’ or ‘silence’. Have we reached a consensual moment where we might all agree it has become urgently necessary to critically look at how the words ‘social’ and ‘media’ might be used together? Is it becoming increasingly pressing to explore how contemporary media forms pervasive networks of both communication and mis-communication? To look at how media can foster community yet also create isolation and foster loneliness?

Each project reflects a unique research trajectory over two years: each artist has developed a unique media language through which they have researched particular topics and then – through a cycle of studio-based practice and critical reflection – have created the artworks and research projects you will find in this show: works about dislocation, disappearance & deprecation.

- Tuesday June 24: the first year students present two events. The Art of Documentation from 17:30 to 18:30 in the WORM filmzaal, followed by Politics of Craft in V2_, which opens at 19:00 and continues until 29 june.

- Saturday June 14 and 18: VHS Anatomy Workshop with Niek Hilkmann, at TENT

- Sunday June 29: the finnisage of Unlinked from 15:00 to 18:00 in TENT, features a launch of the graduation catalogue, a concert by Niek Hilkmann and a performance by Nan Wang.
