Relearn curved. First curl: Rotterdam/Varia

For the Rotterdam control point on the Relearn curve, we propose to together attend to a subject zone (*) where different digital network practices intersect. This subject zone can morph into multiple directions throughout the session. Our specific interest is in how publishing formats (**) operate with/on/through this zone.

* There are many questions in the air when we start to speak about digital infrastructures, hosters, servers, services, networks and their technical realities. Instead of picking one and diving deeper, we thought it would be more interesting to present a range and explore different vocabularies, protocols, technologies, infrastructures. We invite you to join Relearn to stretch this zone, starting from or moving towards:

Nos alegra anunciar otro encuentro Relearn: ¡del 27 al 31 de agosto en Calafou!

Relearn es una escuela-de-verano que invoca a personas artistas, estudiantes, docentes de todos los bagajes y/o disciplinas. Las personas participantes se encontrarán para aprender mutuamente y enseñarse en cruzado, más acá de los paradigmas tradicionales de educación.

En continuación con algunos de los aspectos recurrentes en las tres ediciones pasadas, este cuarto encuentro en Calafou dedicará espacio y tiempo a ciertos asuntos referentes a la estructura y el significado de la escuela misma, tales como:

• cuestiones de reproducción: ¿en qué suerte de economías consiste Relearn, de qué modos se compone al avanzar, y qué relaciones de diferencia son posibles o imaginables para asegurar sus resiliencias?
• cuestiones de documentación: ¿cómo podemos volver sobre las tres estructuras de documentación desplegadas en pasadas ediciones, leer en ellas aspectos continuos y transversales, y también hacerlas legibles para aquellas personas que no participaron en su factura?
• cuestiones de espacio-tiempo: ¿qué tipos de continuidad podemos imaginar para Relearn durante el resto del año; de qué formatos, agendas y espacialidades podríamos dotarnos?

El hecho de estar en Calafou supondrá habitar por unos días un ejemplo de cómo las relaciones de interdependencia entre estructuras autónomas y proyectos externos pueden articularse; desplegar parte del archivo vivo de Relearn ahí, facilitará una intersección con experiencias otras en documentación colectiva, artilugios de etherpad y tecnologías feministas en red.

We are glad to announce another relearn gathering from the 27th to the 31st of August in Calafou!

Relearn is a summerschool which welcomes persons, artists, students, teachers from all backgrounds and disciplines. Participants will gather to learn from and teach to each other, beyond the traditional paradigms of education.

Following up on some recurring topics from the three previous editions, this fourth gathering in Calafou will dedicate space and time to certain issues that regard the structure and meaning of the summer school itself, such as:

• questions of reproduction: what kind of economies do Relearn consists of and thrive on, and what different relations are possible or imaginable to ensure resiliency?
• questions of documentation: how can we return to the three documentation structures of the previous editions, reading continuous
and transversal aspects in them, and making them readable for those who did not participate in their making, too?
• questions of time-space: what type of continuity can there be as Relearn during the year, what different time sets and places and formats?

Being in Calafou will mean inhabiting for a few days an example of how dependence relations between autonomous structures and external institutions can be articulated; bringing part of Relearn's living archive there will allow an intersection with other experiences on collective documentation, etherpad contraptions and feminist networking.

relearn 2015 - call for porposals

Relearn starts from FLOSS culture and practices as a way to address the production processes and frameworks involving technology and culture, in the beginning in the field of graphic design, and in the second edition expanding to production and education in broader terms. A proposal for this third edition is to continue by focusing on technology as such.

Questioning what it consists of, how it 'functions', and challenging the traditional narratives on it. In this moment in which any social, political and personal problem seems to be approached with a technological solution, it feels urgent to rework the assumptions and conceptions we have of technology.

To give an idea of this kind of perspective, there were some interesting questions resulting from past events, as the following: What's the difference between 'tech' and 'technology'? How does a file system relate to an office? Can anything digital be 'immaterial', when it sits in data-centers or it moves over infrastructures? What happens when computing becomes 'invisible'? Are interface-design, packaging and blackboxing similar processes, how do they influence our relation to an object? How do user-friendliness and efficiency determine the way software and devices are developed? 

Hopefully this way of thinking about tools, networks and infrastructures can influence the summer school tracks, offering transversal elements to connect some points in the different worksessions, in relation to one's own practices and tools.

REROAM worksessions

What would it mean to design a school in terms of a nomadic learning   situation? Probably we need to think differently about its physical   characteristics as well as its location and access to pedagogical resources. Then: what is a pedagogical resource? What is the meaning of   "learning infrastructure"? What would an itinerant educational object   look like, and how would it be produced and shared? Do educational   objects actually "learn"? How?

Reroam  proposes daily exercises, a collection of present models, experiences  and theories that examine the physical situations  where learning  happens. Thinking through conviviality and discomfort, we  look for  spaces that would facilitate disensus.Taking our bodies into  account,  we will take a moment every day to speculate together about  ways that  we could make re-learning situations physical.

Relearn 2014 (Variable, BXL)

Relearn is a summerschool with as many teachers as it has participants. It is about sharing and trying Free Culture practices, and is entirely done with Free, Libre and Open Source software. Relearn takes place in Variable, a collectively run F/LOSS Arts Lab in Brussels. It starts from the idea that tools are increasingly mediated by software and the algorithmic and legal dynamics that constraint and shape its use. Reconnecting to the physical and digital material of those tools is a means of (re)asserting ownership and ensuring active participation in the future of our work practices.

Relearn starts on Sunday July 6 at 11:00 and ends Friday 11 July at 19:00
It takes place in Variable, Rue Gallait 80, Brussels.
